What is the national theatre?
The National Theatre is dedicated to expanding the horizons of audiences and artists. In its three theatres on the South Bank in London, it presents an eclectic mix of new plays and classics from around the world, running seven or eight productions at a time. hISTORY OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE
It has been almost five decades since the National Theatre gave its first performance. Since the opening night of Hamlet, starring Peter O'Toole, the National Theatre has produced over 700 plays. The National Theatre Company worked at the Old Vic Theatre for 13 years before Denys Lasdun's National Theatre building was opened in 1976. Each year since the opening, the National has staged over 20 new productions.

The National Theatre has had a huge impact on London's West End, it has not only taken its own original musicals and plays to the West End but it has revived and publicised many old and new plays and musicals. The National has helped productions get transferred onto London's stages and finds new talent everyday.
